In the future, your coffee may soon be made and delivered by your favorite robot barista.  Wait… you can have it now by visiting CafeX at the Metreon shopping complex in San Francisco (as of January 2017).  And it costs less than a human barista making the same quality coffee at Starbucks, Peets or the other leading coffee chains.

Alana and I visited the cafe a few times to try out the new service.  We were very impressed with the quality of the coffee, the fast speed of delivery and the entertainment value of watching the first robotic barista in the nation, nicknamed "Gordon" make us a cup of coffee... in only a few minutes.

CafeX is merging smartphones, wireless and tablets with robot technology to digitally transform the coffee customer experience. Customers can order up to seven different coffees (from an espresso to a cappuccino) at the automated cafe using touchscreens or via a CafeX app.

What's Next for your Local Coffee Cafes

We'll initially see robot baristas in busy high traffic areas in cities, offices, shopping complexes, entertainment properties (like Disney), sports stadiums, transit stations and airports where people are in a rush to get a cup of quality coffee on the run.

The implementation of robots in business will replace older repetitive jobs and help create new, improved and higher skill level jobs.  For example, at CafeX they will need a Cafe Customer Experience Manager who is available to provide customer service and coffee coaching to customers. They also need higher skilled repair specialists who understand hardware and software systems.
